Tanzania's Remote Northern Wilderness

Mkomazi National Park lies in the far northeast of Tanzania, bordering Kenya's Tsavo National Park and forming a vast trans-boundary ecosystem. Covering 3,234 km², Mkomazi was upgraded to national park status in 2008 and remains one of Tanzania's least visited — offering a true off-the-beaten-track safari experience.

The park is perhaps most famous for its successful black rhino and African wild dog conservation programmes. The George Adamson Wildlife Preservation Trust established a rhino sanctuary here in 1989 and today Mkomazi is home to a growing population of these critically endangered animals.

Conservation Legacy

Black Rhino Sanctuary: Mkomazi houses one of Tanzania's most important black rhino breeding populations. The sanctuary covers 58 km² of prime habitat and the population has grown steadily since reintroduction. African Wild Dog Breeding Programme: Mkomazi was one of the first places in East Africa to successfully breed wild dogs in captivity for reintroduction into the wild.

Wildlife

Beyond the flagship species, Mkomazi offers excellent general wildlife viewing. Elephants move freely between Mkomazi and Tsavo, creating some of the largest ranging herds in East Africa. Lions, cheetahs, leopards, giraffes, zebras, various antelope species, and over 450 bird species inhabit the park. The remote Zange area offers the best big game concentrations.
